Agnes Husslein-Arco: The Women of KLIMT, Schiele and Kokoschka

The Women of KLIMT, Schiele and Kokoschka

Description

In the early twentieth century, the traditional relationship between the sexes was challenged by a number of social, economic and philosophical changes, and above all by the development of gender equality. Whilst this provoked vehement argument, sexual liberation, on the other hand, was a common goal of both men and women as they sought to escape the restrictive moral taboos of the nineteenth century. Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka - then the three most outstanding painters of Viennese modernism - approached the subject matter generally referred to as the 'woman question' from slightly different, albeit overlapping perspectives. This book presents an in-depth exploration of these differences and similarities, providing insights into the relationship between the sexes in the early twentieth century.

Youngsters will travel with Achilles, who, guided by the gods, seeks vengeance on the Trojans. They'll follow Odysseus on his perilous journey to the land of the Cyclops, a race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of his forehead. They'll encounter Circe, the evil enchantress who turns Odysseus's men into swine; meet the terrible sea monster Charybdis, who, with Scylla, a six-headed serpent, threatens passing ships and their crews; and confront other wicked forces that attempt to keep Odysseus from returning to his faithful wife, Penelope. * And as if all this weren't enough -- Dr. Seuss's ABC in 26 flaps!" For fans of Joan of Arc and Alexander the Great, comes "a gripping saga of alliances, intrigues, deceits, and treacheries" about Anna Comnena of the Byzantine Empire. "A very quiet man, smoking all the time. He used to tattoo while seated on a little bench in the back room of his house at 59 Redfern Road, Harleston, in London, while his wife busied herself in the kitchen. There was no flash on the wall, just a book on the table and on the side of his bench he had a roll of paper towel, actually a toilet roll. It was a small room. You had to wait outside. You could not go in until someone came out. There not much to tell about Rich Mingins," recalls George Bone, whose body is adorned with examples of Mingins's work. Tattoo artist George Bone is one of the few surviving people with tattoos by Mingins, who was an enigmatic man about whom very little is known. "When he was doing his tattoos, he actually never spoke. His work spoke for itself."And that it did. Mingins's work was extremely popular in his time. "His artistic work and custom designs were of high quality, and really stood apart from work of other tattoo artists," states Bone, "I had the impression, perhaps mistakenly, that he was the type of man who would say no to an interview, The Women of KLIMT, Schiele and Kokoschka download ebook so it's not surprising that so little is known about him."Mingins's scrapbooks convey a beautiful overview of the world of tattoos and attitudes toward them during the first half of the 20th century.
